Sacred Plants
“We recognize and work with healing plants and sacramental entheogens (psychoactive substances for engendering spiritual development in sacred containers and ceremony). The word Entheogens comes from entheos “full of the god, inspired, possessed”, and is the root of the English word “enthusiasm” and Genesthai means “to come into being.””
While sacred plants can be powerful tools for creating transformational moments of physical and spiritual break-through, we are committed to their intentional, sacred and conscious use.
Many of these sacred plants have been used for hundreds of years in indigenous cultures in sacred practices and rituals. The world has greatly benefitted from some of these tribes and groups welcoming outsiders and sharing their plants, songs, rituals and wisdom. A few elders and shaman have even left their forests and communities to bring these traditions and medicines to the outside world. Some have also trained outsiders how to share their songs, medicines and traditions.
While it’s exciting to know that millions of people have benefitted from spiritual advancement due to their experience with these plants, many have also had adverse and harmful experiences. With Kauai being one of the most spiritual meccas on earth we are a natural place for spiritual gurus, elders, shaman and leaders to come visit and share their gifts. Like all bright lights, our island also attracts people who may be selling, serving and sharing sacred plants and other psychedelics like bufo, kambo and other powerful venom medicines for more self-serving motives.
In 2021 our church leaders and other community members began to discuss concerns about the overuse and sometimes misuse of some of these powerful tools in Hawaii. Sadly, some people serve these plants for either financial gain or to wield some form of control over participants. We formed a committee whose purpose is to help ensure the responsible use of all sacred plants. The result of our discussions and prayers have led to a total ban of any un-sanctioned use on property. Any such ceremonial use needs unanimous agreement from the entire plant medicine council after background checks, prayer and our list of criteria for safety and support have all been satisfied.
In 2023 we decided our focus should shift from creating space for such ceremonies to creating integration opportunities for people who have sat with our sacred plant teachers. We also reached out to other churches, groups and individuals we know share these medicines on island in order to form a network of like-minded community committed to the safe, sacred and responsible use of all such plants.
To anyone thinking of participating in a plant medicine ceremony we encourage you to seek references for those facilitating and to be very prayerful and intentional with your decision. While we continue to value the miraculous transformations these plants can create, we focus on sound, breath, prayer, meditation, yoga and other modalities of spiritual transformation and growth. If you have questions or are seeking assistance integrating please feel free to reach out to us.
Many Blessings
